Vasopneumatic Therapy
What a weird large word, but when you break it down it becomes obvious. Vaso- meaning “vessel” and -pneumatic meaning “pressured air”. So what could this vessel pressured air therapy be?
Vasopneumatic therapy is a non-invasive and painless passive modality that uses an external device to apply compression to your extremities.
What does it do?
It can help treat swollen wounds, non-healing wounds, lymphedema, and some circulatory disorders. How does this relate to chiropractic? Well, it doesn’t exactly fit. Where the crossover is found is its compressive effect on “milking” and massaging the muscular tissue of its metabolic end products that come from physical activity.
When you exercise, your muscles produce lactic acid as a result of using the energy you have in your tissues. This lactic acid can build up and cause soreness. Generally, the more activity, the more lactic acid produced, and the more sore you’ll be.
This compressive therapy helps to massage your muscles and “milk” them of the lactic acid so that your kidneys filter through it faster than waiting for natural circulation. This massage-like action is great for warming up too! With a shorter session we can use vasopneumatic therapy to warm up before activity. However, it’s primary usage would be to enhance recovery.
